Belong to a community
Make friends across generations in a welcoming, encouraging group that rehearses and performs together.
Perform on stage
Put your learning into practice at concerts and community events, building confidence with every performance.
How the academy works
Our academy supports beginners and developing musicians as they build the skills to play in a brass band. Led by experienced volunteers, it's a relaxed, encouraging environment where everyone learns at their own pace.
- All ages welcome — from school-age learners through to adults.
- No experience needed — start from the very beginning.
- Instruments to suit you — cornet, tenor horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba and more, with instruments available to hire.
- A clear pathway — progress from the academy into the main band when you're ready.
The academy band practises from 6:30pm on Tuesday nights in the Rolleston Primary School hall, with terms following the school year. Get in touch and we'll let you know about joining and any costs involved.
Pathways for every player
Complete beginners
Never played before? We'll help you choose an instrument and learn the fundamentals step by step.
Returning players
Played years ago and want to start again? Brush off the cobwebs in a supportive, no-pressure setting.
Young musicians
A great way for students in Selwyn to develop musically and perform with a real band. There's no strict minimum age — late primary and intermediate school age is typical.
